Pros and Cons of Rolling Sheet Doors

By May 12, 2016 No Comments

Now that you’ve planned your building, found a location, and have selected the materials and design, it’s time to pick the type of door for your work area. While there are almost endless options to choose from, each has its own benefits and disadvantages. Today, we’ll take a look at the pros and cons of rolling sheet doors.

The Pros:

  • Rolling sheet doors are incredibly reliable and save space in your workshop, giving you more options for lighting or vertical storage space.
  • These doors are made of recyclable metal, so if yours is damaged and needs replacing, it can be recycled rather than taking up space in a landfill.
  • There are a number of options for installation and operation. Using a motor will allow you to automatically raise and lower the door at the touch of a button. For a lower cost installation, the door can be set to operate with a hand crank or pulley system.
  • Just like your engineered metal building, your rolling sheet door is designed to be extremely durable and to withstand severe weather.
  • Security is a concern for many workshops and rolling sheet doors are one of the most secure options available. They cannot be manually operated from the outside and many motors lock the door when it is shut.

The Cons:

  • Rolling sheet doors can be noisy as they operate. If your building needs a quiet door, you may want to explore other options.
  • The R-value of the doors is often lower than sectional garage doors. The R-value determines the insulating properties of the door, and rolling doors simply aren’t the best at blocking outside weather conditions from seeping into your business.
