Metal Roofs can be Fitted with Solar Panels

By September 8, 2016 No Comments

Now that metal roofs are becoming more and more popular for residential and commercial properties, we’re also seeing an increase in the number of clients looking to install solar panels to their roofing system. While solar panels can easily be installed on a metal roof, there are some things you’ll have to consider prior to installing your panels.

What You Should Consider

  • Solar panels can be mounted to a metal roof a number of different ways. If your roof has standing seams, solar panels can be fitted with clamps that mount to the seam, giving your roof a clean appearance. However, be careful to avoid bending the seam when you mount the panel. Not only will this lead to a risk of rust and damage, but it will also void your roof’s warranty. Always get a clamp that fits the seam correctly to avoid damage.
  • Be aware of what’s below your solar panels. Each panel adds additional weight to your roof and when tied down properly, they must withstand the same conditions your metal roof is designed to withstand. If your roof is built up around a layer of insulation, you’ll want to mount the solar panels on a spacer to prevent crushing the insulation.
  • Have the solar panels installed by an expert rather than attempting to do it yourself. Improper installation may damage your roof and can keep the solar panels from working optimally. Your solar panel retailer will be able to help you find an experienced professional to install your panels.
